Synopsis: The Art of the Trade is a searing portrait of the futures and options brokerage industry as seen through the eyes of someone who has participated in the industry for over 20 years. On one level, it’s a brutally honest, no-punches-pulled rebuke of how the brokerage industry deceives the general public with the idea they can make big money trading -- when in reality the brokerage firms are mainly interested in extracting as much commission income as possible from the public. On another level, The Art of the Trade is an intensely personal story of the triumphs, failures and learning experiences of the author as he battles the markets, the brokerage industry, and his own penchant for self-destruction. The book is oftentimes funny, and sometimes hilarious. The author describes the fly-by-night brokerage offices that spring up like weeds in the back offices of Chicago’s financial district, only to be suddenly closed down a few months later – with the owners fleeing without paying bills or salaries. He lays bare an industry where drug use, financial fraud, and personal vendettas are commonplace; and where the customer is routinely victimized. Over time, Jankovsky comes to grips with the realities of the business and the realities of the markets – and learns how to succeed in the markets on his own terms. Originally self-published in 1999, this new edition discusses the author's most recent experiences and provides more insights into what it takes to succeed as a trader.
